Microsclerotherapy
Your leg veins may be impacting on your confidence and preventing you from wearing certain clothes to enjoying certain activities. We are pleased to offer microsclerotherapy to treat your spider veins also known as telangiectasia.
Microsclerotherapy
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure that involves injecting a sterile prescription liquid medicine – known as sclerosant – into the affected vein.
The medicine targets and breaks down the lining of the vein wall. This controlled injury triggers a healing action causing the vein to eventually close off and die. At Riverside Skin & Laser Clinic we offer microsclerotherapy for spider and reticular veins and the treatment is carried out by our trained and qualified aesthetic nurse practitioner.
Larger varicose veins should be treated by a doctor or surgeon.
Frequently asked questions
FAQs about Microsclerotherapy
Who will carry out my treatment?
Our aesthetic nurse practitioner will carry out the treatment following an initial consultation and examination of your legs where you can discuss the treatment and your medical history.
Which areas can be treated?
We will only treat veins on the legs with microsclerotherapy due to the risk of scarring, staining or necrosis. We will not do microsclerotherapy on the face but have alternative treatments we can use for thread veins on the face.
How many treatments will I need?
It is not unusual to need 2 to 3 treatments for the best outcome. These are normally carried out 8 to 12 weeks apart.
Please bear in mind that your veins will look worse before they start to look better.
Is there any downtime?
You won't need to take any time off work after your treatments, and you can continue with most of you usual activities. It is however recommended that you avoid intense exercise for 48 hours, as well as avoiding direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks.
You will need to avoid air travel for four weeks post treatment.
What results can I expect to see?
Microsclerotherapy can significantly improve spider and reticular veins.
If you have visible leg veins, the treatment can help clear them away, success rates are high with clinical studies showing them to be over 90%.
Whilst the visible veins on the surface of your larger skin can fade away with sclerotherapy, it is important to remember that larger veins deeper in your legs can reopen and start to feed more surface veins. Therefore, you may need further treatment over time.
You will normally see the true results 3 months after your treatment.
Is there any aftercare required?
You will need to wear compression hosiery for 7 -14 days following your treatment or as advised by your practitioner. This enhances the efficiency of the treatment.
